Who we are

We are the South Orange/Maplewood Community Coalition on Race.

Many communities are diverse; few are integrated.  Diversity may find people of different races and ethnicities living near each other, but integration finds them living with each other – interacting, forming friendships, participating fully in the community’s economic, political, civic and cultural life. Integration requires action—that’s what the South Orange/Maplewood Community Coalition on Race is all about.

How can you support integration?

This is our vision, together:

Our guiding principle is intentional integrationWe work to support racially integrated neighborhoods and schools and advocate for racial equity. For over 25 years, the Community Coalition on Race has worked toward racial, ethnic, and cultural inclusion in every facet of public life through strategic, collective action and advocacy.

Most of all, we are neighbors who love our towns and envision a community in which:

  • Prospective in-movers of all races are welcomed in every part of South Orange and Maplewood and all neighborhoods are racially integrated.
  • People of all races enjoy the benefits of participation in civic life with collective leadership that values equity and integration in policies, practices, programs, and partnerships.
  • The school district is stably integrated. Students of all races are expected and encouraged to excel.
