South Orange/Maplewood Community Coalition on Race | South Orange Village

The Village of South Orange, located just 17 miles from New York City, is one of the jewels of Essex County, New Jersey. This 400 year old municipality offers residents historic charm and the diversity of city living in a culturally and enriched suburb. Known famously for its sidewalks with working gas lamps, South Orange boasts a thriving Downtown shopping area, beautiful parks, a Performing Arts Center (SOPAC) and residential areas of authentic Tudor, Colonial and Victorian homes and gracious rental residences.

New Jersey Transit Mid-Town Direct service to Manhattan serves both Mountain and South Orange stations. In town, bus routes transverse the Village, taxi service is available and there is both residential and public parking. South Orange is minutes from major state highways.

South Orange and Maplewood share a school district. One High School, 2 middle schools, and 6 elementary schools serve the community. Private schools include several day and pre-schools. South Orange is home to Seton Hall University.

Residents say “diversity is South Orange’s most appealing quality.”  The New York Times Real Estate Section, Sunday, September 18, 2011, contained this article: Living in South Orange: The Love for One Orange.
